
American hurdler Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is American track and field athlete and the legend in hurdles. She is the current world record holder in 400m hurdles, as well as four-time Olympics champion and three-time World champion. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is the living legend in 400m hurdles and is unbeaten in that event recent years. She also competed in 400m and 4x400m relay.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone was born on August 7, 1999, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, United States. Shestarted running at early age and showed her exceptional talent and skills.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone started competing already in 2013 to win the 300m gold at the New York Bishop Loughlin Games. During the next season, she showed her skills in hurdles are triumphed with the gold in 55m hurdles at the
New York Armory Union County Championships and Toms River Non-Public A Group Championships, as well as 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles at the Plainfield Union County Championships. She also won her first junior national honor, winning the 400m hurdles silver at the Eugene USA Junior Championships.
In 2015, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone made her international breakthrough to win the 400m hurdles gold at the Cali IAAF World Youth Championships. Earlier she won the Lisle USA World Youth Trials, clocking a personal best of 55.28 sec.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone made her Olympics debut in 2016, competing at Rio Games in 400m hurdles, but failed to overcome the semi-finals and did not reached the final. Meanwhile, she won the gold at the Clovis USATF Junior Championships and finished third at the Eugene US Olympic Trials with 54.15 sec.
Although still missing to prove her skills at senior level, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone was considered the most talented American hurdler. In 2017, she won the gold at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Distance Medley Short Track, but again missed the honor at the Sacramento USA Championships in 400m hurdles, finishing 6th.
In 2018, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone started the season strongly by winning the gold at the Gainesville Florida Relays in 200m, 400m, and 4x400m relay, as well as the silver in 200m at the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships in Texas. At the end of the season, she won her first senior national title, triumphing with the 400m hurdles gold at the Eugene NCAA Division I Championships.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone started the 2019 season strongly and showed her domination in the athletics and hurdles. SHe made her debut in the Diamond League and secured her first Diamond League win at the Oslo Bislett Games in 400m hurdles after some weeks ago winning the 400m silver at the Shanghai IAAF Diamond League. She triumphed with 400m hurdles gold at Monaco Diamond League and the Diamond League Final Weltklasse Zurich. Meanwhile, she won the gold at the Meeting de Marseille Pro Athle Tour, the silver at the Des Moines USA Championships. She ended the season by winning the 400m hurdles silver and 4x400m relay gold at the Doha IAAF World Championships in Athletics.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone missed the 2020 season, but returned in 2021 stronger than ever and started her real dominance in 400m hurdles. She won the US Olympic Trials with a new world record of 51.90 sec. Subsequently, during the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone improved her world record to 51.46 sec, securing the Olympic gold medal. Additionally, she earned another gold medal as a member of the women’s 4x400m relay team.
In 2022, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone began her season at the Penn Relays Carnival, competing in the 100m hurdles where she achieved victory with a time of 12.75 sec. In June, she once again set a new world record in the 400m hurdles, clocking in at 51.41 sec during the USATF Championships held at Hayward Field in Eugene. The following month, during the World Championships, also at Hayward Field, she shattered her previous record again, finishing in 50.68 sec and making history as the first woman to complete the 400m hurdles in under 51 seconds. Additionally, she secured a gold medal as part of the Women’s 4x400m relay team, running the final leg. She concluded her season by triumphing at the Gyulai Istvan Memorial in Szekesfehervar, where she established a European all-comers record with a time of 51.68 sec.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone switched to 400m in 2023. On June 9, she competed in her inaugural professional 400-meter race, clocking in at 49.71 sec and securing second place behind Marileidy Paulino during the Diamond League event held in Paris, France. Later that same month, she recorded a time of 49.51 sec at the New York Grand Prix. On July 8, McLaughlin-Levrone achieved a world-leading time of 48.74 sec at the USATF Championships in Eugene, Oregon, just missing Sanya Richards-Ross’s American record of 48.70 sec. On August 11, she opted out of the 2023 World Athletics Championships because of a knee injury.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone made another strong season in 2024. She started by winning the 100m hurdles gold at the Occidental Invitational, 200m gold at the USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix, and 400m hurdles gold at the The HBCU Pro Classic – The Edwin Moses Legends Meet. She continue strongly and triumphed with 400m gold at the USATF New York City Grand Prix and won the US Olympic Team Trials in 400m hurdles, improving her world record to 50.65 sec. AT the Paris 2024 Olympics, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone won the 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay gold medals and again improved her 400m hurdles world record to 50.37 sec. On September 3, it was revealed that she would take part in the 200m and 400m races at the 2024 Diamond League finals, scheduled for September 13 and 14 in Brussels, Belgium. However, the following day, Petr Stastny, the CEO of Diamond League, announced that she was not eligible to participate in the finals. This was due to her absence from any Diamond League events during the 2024 season, leading her to miss out on accumulating points and qualifying for a wild card. Instead, she participated in the preliminary events for these distances and secured victories with times of 22.40 sec and 49.11 sec.
In 2025, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone announced that will take part at the Grand Slam Athletics tour of Michael Johnson. She won the 400m hurdles gold at the Grand Slam Track Kingston and Grand Slam Track Miami, and finished 5th in Philadelphia in 100m hurdles. However, the Los Angeles event was canceled, which seriously affected her season schedule. She continue Prefontaine Classic in 400m and Eugene USA Championships in 400m, which gave her quota for World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
