Ten facts about Jakob Ingebrigtsen
Few athletes in modern sports have had as much of an impact on athletics as Jakob Ingebrigtsen. Whether he’s breaking another world record or openly provoking his rivals on the track, the Norwegian is undoubtedly one of the most striking figures in middle- and long-distance running.
Here are ten interesting facts about the Norwegian superstar that reveal more about his path and life outside of sports:
YouTube star
Jakob Ingebrigtsen maintains his own YouTube channel, where he regularly shares exclusive footage of his training process, news about his recovery from injuries and moments from his personal life. His channel enjoys over 116 thousand subscribers, and his videos have a total of nearly 5.5 million views.
The first sub-4-minute mile
In 2017, the Norwegian managed to get under the four-minute mark in the classic one-mile distance, recording a time of 3:58.07 minutes. He was only 16 at the time, and it was his first official race over the distance. He then became the youngest runner to achieve the feat, a record that was broken last year by 15-year-old New Zealander Sam Root.
Youth triumph
The 2017 European Junior and Junior U20 Championships in Grosseto brought together future world greats, including Lieke Klaver and Armand Duplantis. Ingebrigtsen left the race with gold medals in the 5000m and 3000m steeplechase, with only a fall in the 1500m final depriving him of a third sure-fire title.
World debut at just 16
Just a few weeks after his success in Grosseto, still 16, Jakob made his debut at the men’s world championships. In London, he started in the 3000m steeplechase and finished eighth in his heat, won by future champion Conseslus Kipruto.
First taste of European glory for men
After his success in the juniors, the Norwegian phenomenon made his debut at the European Men’s Championships on August 8 in Berlin in the 1500m heats. Only at the age of 17 did he grab the gold medal, and a day later he triumphed with the title in the 5000m.
The champion family relay
The gold in the 1500m in Berlin makes Jakob the third representative of the Jakob Ingebrigtsen family to win the European crown at this distance. Before him, his older brothers became champions — Philip in 2016 and Henrik in 2012. All three brothers ran shoulder to shoulder in the final in Berlin.
Passion for Pokémon
Jakob Ingebrigtsen has been a big fan of the Pokémon universe since his childhood, inspired by his older brothers. He collects cards, one of his most valuable specimens being a gold Charizard card. The hobby helps him relieve his mind from the tension on the track.
European record holder
With his victory in the 5000 meters at the European Championships in Birmingham in 2026, the Norwegian now owns seven gold medals from continental championships. This achievement solidifies his leading position as the most titled male track and field athlete in the history of the European Championships.
Family for the TV screen
The enormous interest in the family in Norway leads to the creation of a documentary reality series. The first season of the show “Tim Ingebrigtsen” started in 2016, and the project continues successfully until its fifth season, airing in December 2021.
The return of the champion
Earlier this year, during the indoor season, Jakob Ingebrigtsen revealed that he had undergone surgery for a chronic Achilles tendon problem. Despite doubts about whether he would be able to defend his title, just 28 weeks later the Norwegian returned to optimal sports form and unequivocally grabbed the gold in Birmingham.
