Slovenian athlete Agata Zupin
Slovenian track and field athlete Agata Zupin has established herself as one of the most prominent hurdlers in Eastern Europe. Born on March 17, 1998, in Ljubljana, Zupin’s career is a masterclass in early brilliance, devastating adversity, and the unyielding willpower required to return to the highest tiers of global athletics. Specializing in the grueling 400-meter hurdles, she continues to serve as an inspiration for the next generation of Slovenian runners.
Agata Zupin first burst onto the international scene as a teenager, showcasing raw speed and a natural technical rhythm over the hurdles. Representing her longtime club, Atletsko društvo Kamnik under the guidance of coach Damjan Zlatnar, 2017 became her breakout calendar year.
At just 19 years old, Agata Zupin traveled to Grosseto, Italy, for the 2017 European U20 Championships. In a blistering final, she secured the silver medal and shattered the Slovenian National Record with a stunning time of 55.96 seconds. Weeks later, she proved her mark was no fluke at the 2017 World Athletics Championships in London. Competing against the absolute best senior athletes in the world, she advanced straight to the semifinals, eventually finishing 21st globally.
At that exact moment, the sports world viewed Agata Zupin as a future global finalist and a generational talent for Slovenian track and field.
The trajectory of an elite athlete is rarely linear. Following her monumental 2017 season, Zupin faced severe physical setbacks. A complex, career-threatening injury sidelined her from peak performance during years that should have marked her physical prime.
“Few people realize how severe my injury actually was”, Agata Zupin later reflected in a candid interview with local sports media. The road back required years of grueling physical therapy, step-by-step reconditioning, and immense mental fortitude. While she missed critical development windows, her competitive fire never dimmed. Her focus pivoted from chasing medals to simply rebuilding her body from the ground up.
Agata Zupin’s patience yielded a major competitive resurrection. By 2022, she was fit enough to qualify for a packed international schedule. She represented Slovenia at the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade, the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, and the European Championships in Munich.
Though she was still finding her pre-injury rhythm, she proved she belonged among elite company. Her resilience peaked during regional events; she took home a gold medal at the 2022 Balkan Championships in Craiova with a seasonal best of 57.05 seconds, engineering a dominant straight-away lead to cross the line first. Additionally, she claimed a silver medal in the 4×400-meter relay at the 2022 Mediterranean Games in Oran.
She followed up these performances by competing at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest and the 2024 European Championships in Rome.
Agata Zupin has diversified her racing calendar, using flat sprints to build the pure velocity needed to anchor her hurdle performance. She took first place at the Slovenian National Indoor Championships in Novo Mesto, running a 54.69-second flat 400 meters.
Her momentum extended, where she won the flat 400-meter race at the Athletic Cup Championships in Maribor with a sharp time of 54.25 seconds. On the hurdles side, she continues to represent Slovenia with distinction, most recently placing 7th in the 400-meter hurdles final at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto.
Agata Zupin’s story is far more than a collection of times and medals. While her national record of 55.96 seconds still stands unchallenged in the Slovenian record books, her true legacy lies in her refusal to quit when her body faltered. Guided by the community at Atletsko društvo Kamnik, she transitioned from a teenage prodigy into a battle-tested veteran.
As she continues to stride over hurdles on tracks across Europe, Agata Zupin stands as a testament to the fact that an athlete’s career is defined not by how fast they run when things are perfect, but by how determinedly they rise after they fall.
