
Iceland high jumper Birta Maria Haraldsdottir
Birta Maria Haraldsdottir is track and field athlete from Iceland, who competes in the high jump. She is a three-time national champion and has a personal best of 187cm, being just 1cm below the women’s national record.
Birta Maria Haraldsdottir was born on March 19, 2004. She started in athletics at an early age and showed great skills and talent, becoming a junior champion in different age groups.
Birta Maria Haraldsdottir started her competitive career already in 2019, winning the high jump, 100m and 200m gold medals at the Selfoss Icelandic U16 Championships. The same season, although quite young, she debuted at the Reykjavík Icelandic Championships in the high jump, finishing 5th with 163cm.
In 2020, Birta Maria Haraldsdottir already proved to be the top high jumper in the country, winning the silver at the Hafnarfjordur Icelandic Indoor Championships with a personal best of 173cm and later during the season triumphing with her first national title at the Akureyri Icelandic Championships, clearing 169cm. During the season, she won the high jump silver at the Hafnarfjordur Icelandic U18 Indoor Championships, where won also the 60m and 200m gold medals.
Birta Maria Haraldsdottir started the 2021 season by winning the high jump silver at the Innanfelagsmot FH in Hafnarfjordur and winning the bronze at the RIG Games in Reykjavík with 170cm. At the MI innanhuss in Reykjavík, she improved her season’s best to 172cm, but did not perform strong at the Reykjavík Icelandic Indoor Championships, clearing only 140cm and remained 9th. Birta Maria Haraldsdottir failed again at the Akureyri Icelandic Championships to finish 4th with the modest 157cm. By the end of the seasopn, her results were quite disappointing and she did not improved her results, although won the silver at the 54. Bikarkeppni FRI utanhuss.
Birta Maria Haraldsdottir missed the 2022 season, but returned to the track in 2023 by winning the high jump golds at the Hafnarfjordur Icelandic U20 Indoor Championships and Kopvogur Icelandic U20 Championships, clearing 165cm and 171cm. She continue with impressive performance during the season by winning the gold at the Vormot IR in Reykjavík with 170cm and improving her personal best to 180cm at the Oslo Nordic U20 Match, claiming the gold. Birta Maria Haraldsdottir won the high jump silver at the Reykjavík Icelandic Championships with 174cm and competed at the Jerusalem European Athletics U20 Championships, but did not overcome the qualifications with 177cm. She ended the season by winning the gold at the 56. Bikarkeppni FRI utanhuss in Reykjavík.
In 2024, Birta Maria Haraldsdottir won the Reykjaví Icelandic Indoor Championships with 174cm, but her biggest achievement was at the Malmo Nordic Senior Championships, setting a personal best of 187cm, claiming the silver. During the season, she won the high jump gold at the Reykjavik International Games, Reykjavik Icelandic U23 Indoor Championships and Gibraltar Championships of the Small States of Europe (clearing 185cm), the silver at the Kortrijk Moore-Guldensporenmeeting (clearing 181cm), as well as the bronze at the IFAM Outdoor in Brussels (clearing 185cm).
After the very strong season, Birta Maria Haraldsdottir started in 2025 with her third national title at the Reykjavík Iceland Indoor Championships.
