Rachael Rudel blazes to glory at Abbott Dash to the Finish Line 5K in New York

Athletics News . Running News Article

The electric atmosphere of marathon weekend swept through Midtown Manhattan on Saturday, October 31, 2026, as the annual Abbott Dash to the Finish Line 5K delivered a world-class display of road-racing excellence. Acting as the highly anticipated prelude to the legendary TCS New York City Marathon, the race took thousands of participants on a high-energy tour from the United Nations building to the iconic marathon finish line in Central Park. Against a heavily stacked field of elite competitors, unsponsored breakout star Rachael Rudel captured a phenomenal victory, clocking a massive 40-second personal best of 15:35 minutes to claim the overall crown.

The elite women’s field took off under crisp autumn conditions, with a fierce lead pack forming almost immediately. The early miles required smart tactical positioning as the runners navigated the undulating, hilly streets of New York. A dense vanguard of American distance standouts kept the pace aggressive, matching surges as they moved closer to the borders of Central Park.

The defining moment of the race unfolded with roughly one kilometer remaining. Embracing the festive Halloween spirit, the 32-year-old Colorado native injected a devastating surge that fractured the lead pack completely. Rudel, who has been on an absolute tear this season under coach David Roche, proved her recent victories at the USATF 20K Championship and the B.A.A. 10K were no fluke. Her relentless gear change up the final inclines allowed her to break the tape unaccompanied at Tavern on the Green. Standing atop the podium completely independent of a shoe contract, Rudel playfully joked post-race that she was dressed up as someone sponsored by every single brand, though official negotiations are reportedly underway.

While Rudel celebrated her milestone victory, a ferocious battle for the remaining spots on the podium played out just a few ticks behind her. Fellow American Josette Andrews of the On Athletics Club spearheaded the chasing pack, executing a strong closing sprint through the park. Andrews crossed the timing mats in 15:41 to secure a hard-fought second-place finish, capping off an exceptionally resilient performance.

A mere single second later, Ednah Kurgat representing the U.S. Army crossed the line to complete the podium. Kurgat stopped the clock at a lifetime personal best of 15:42, holding off a late charge from the secondary tier of runners to comfortably pocket the bronze medal.

The depth of women’s distance running was on full display in Manhattan, with five American athletes breaking the elusive 16-minute barrier on a challenging course. Bailey Hertenstein produced a beautifully paced, calculated effort to lock down fourth place. Pushing hard over the closing loop, Hertenstein crossed the finish line in a swift 15:46.

Rounding out the elite top five was Kenya’s collegiate phenom, Hilda Olemomoi. Olemomoi matched the blistering tempo of the domestic core through the middle sectors, ultimately stopping the clock in 15:47 to secure her position against a world-class field. The tightly bunched finish of the top five—separated by a mere 12 seconds—underscored the elite competitive nature of the event.

4. Bailey Hertenstein (United States) – 15:46 min
5. Hilda Olemomoi (Kenya) – 15:47 min

Organized by the New York Road Runners, the Abbott Dash to the Finish Line 5K serves as an essential fixture of marathon weekend, giving short-course specialists and global fans alike a chance to experience the hallowed grounds of the Central Park finish.

The 2026 edition will be long remembered for Rudel’s courageous front-running and tactical brilliance. As the running world pivots its attention to the grueling 26.2-mile main event the following morning, the high-octane speed and personal records established on Halloween morning set an elite, inspiring benchmark for the thousands of marathoners waiting in the wings.
