Sifan Hassan admitted that her hardest decision was moving to the US
Many see Sifan Hassan as a superwoman, but the Olympic marathon champion admits that she’s far from it. The three-time Olympic champion was forced to seek asylum in the Netherlands from Ethiopia as a teenager and had to adapt to a new culture.
She moved to the Netherlands in 2008, at the age of 15. In 2017, Sifan Hassan moved to the United States. She admits that she makes bold moves with fear, and things have worked out well for her. She’s an inspiration to young women who have no idea where to start.
In an interview with Athletics Weekly, Sifan Hassan said that these were some of the hardest decisions she’s had to make, but in the end, she managed to make something beautiful out of the sacrifices.
“I made some decisions that I thought were impossible, but I tried. You know, that’s why I’m not afraid to try. Things come to me. I’m a normal person. I might be scared. I always doubt myself, but because I’ve been through so many challenges, even when I’m scared, I still try. Whenever I look back, that’s actually the key for me. It was hard, but it was also beautiful”, shared Sifan Hassan.
She added that moving to the US changed everything in her life and career. She admitted that she was even more scared than moving to the Netherlands.
Sifan Hassan pointed out that her career was already on the right track, but she wants more.
“The hardest moment came when I had to make the decision to move forward, to dream of something bigger, and to move to America. It was: What if I don’t do well, what if I go there and it doesn’t work out? But I’m also a person who, when I start something, I go all the way. I’m not going to give up right away”, said Sifan Hassan. “If I go to America and it doesn’t work out for a year or two, I’m not going to give up right away. I’m going to try. I’m not losing hope. I imagined I had nothing and I imagined I had succeeded, so I still made this decision”, added she.
