World record holder Ruth Chepngetich will compete at the London Marathon
World record holder Ruth Chepngetich will compete in the London Marathon on April 27. The 30-year-old Kenyan athlete ran the fastest time in women’s history at the Chicago Marathon last October, when she finished in 2:09:57 hours.
“The London Marathon always brings together the best athletes in the world. I didn’t know [setting the world record in Chicago] was possible, but it happened and it was a dream come true”, said Ruth Chepngetich.
The Kenyan will join Olympic champion Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands and compatriot Peres Jepchirchir in London, who holds the world record in the all-women’s marathon. Peres Jepchirchir’s time is 2:16:16 hours from London last year.
“Me, Peres and the other women are strong, so it will be a competitive race. I want to prepare as well as I can and we’ll see if I can break Peres’ world record. I think we can support each other and maybe the world record will fall”, added Ruth Chepngetich.
